Tsunami Warning Solution

American Signal Corporation has developed a complete solution to provide outdoor warning against a potential tsunami. The system is comprised of the CompuLert control system from a central location communicating with all of the sirens throughout a coastal area.

In the wake of the 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami that devastated parts of Southeast Asia, American Signal Corporation was asked to design and install outdoor mass notification systems for several coastal and island nations that are at risk of severe damage. By protecting their populations and their tourists, these countries have demonstrated proactive concern to minimize the devastation from the next tragic event. It has helped regenerate their once-thriving tourist industries and encourage international capital investment in their devastated regions. Their mass notification systems will not only warn of the next disaster, but contribute to rebuilding from the last one.

In a recent project, ASC installed more than 1000 high-powered speaker arrays on towers throughout the coastal areas of an Asian country. Deploying the system created communication resources in the most remote regions; for the first time in history, the country has an end to end communications network. The warning system is managed by one national and a group of regional control centers; it is controlled across a satellite communications system. It is used, of course, for emergency warnings, but in this proud, reverent country, the system is also used for religious messages, patriotic notices, and to play the national anthem at the same time throughout the nation. Once the initial system was deployed in 2005, the government embarked on an ambitious program to deploy warning solutions to 100% of their nation. They have deployed many capabilities since 2005 and have years of phases planned to further advance the system.

A nearby nation, also devastated in 2004’s tsunami, toured the tsunami warning system; the government promptly announced that they wanted the same system to protect their country. For Phase I in 2007, American Signal designed the system and installed 50 towers with high-powered speaker arrays to protect the nation’s coastal areas. This is an ongoing project as the country works to provide alerts throughout the nation for a wide variety of emergencies. More than 400 towers are planned; they are being deployed as funds allow.

American Signal Corporation has deployed mass notification systems for several Pacific nations and territories that are at risk of tsunami. We have been called to consult on warning system technology and solutions for countries investigating solutions.

We have the expertise and experience to efficiently deploy thousands of towers across thousands of square miles and manage them all from central and regional control centers using the most up-to-date SCADA software and satellite communication links.
